Bangladesh railway was introduced from 15 November, 1862 with only 53.11 Km railway route only. Dorshona was the first Railway station in Bangladesh. Passing of the years now Bangladesh railway is a well furnished and completed transport system. Bangladesh government has separated Railway from Ministry of Communication. Now Bangladesh railway authority has been operated by Minister of Railway.
Bangladesh Railway is one of the main transport system in the country. About 50 million passengers were transported by BR during 2004-05. Intercity Train services were introduced for first time in 1985. Now there are 54 Intercity Trains are running. Around 42.5% of the total passengers of BR are being transported by the Intercity trains. Again about 75.7% of the total earnings come from these passenger traffic.
